(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, we are the 3 English Experts. I'm Rebecca. I'm Dave. I'm Birgit. And welcome to this episode. 3 English Experts is your English podcast to help you speak better English and create a positive and happy mindset for your English learning journey. Hi, everyone, and welcome to our Christmas special. It's that time of year again. We are in the Christmas mood. So like last year, we are going to have a Christmas quiz. And this year it's going to be a little bit different. So we're going to do Germany versus England. Birgit will be representing Germany, of course. Hello. And Dave will be representing England. And I will be the quiz master. So I am asking the questions and I promise you they do not know the questions. They were quite nervous before we started. Unfortunately not. I'm a little worried. Don't worry. And our topic this year, last year, we talked about the difference between German and British traditions. And this year we're going to focus on Christmas songs and famous Christmas films. There we go. We're going to start off with a song question. Let's start with an easy one. So this is going to Birgit. Grammar Queen. Here's your first question. Last Christmas by Wham! is a great example of which grammar tense? Is it present perfect, past simple or past continuous? I know that one. That's not your question. You're not the grammar queen, are you? Thank you for starting off really easy for me. That's past simple. Last Christmas. Can you give an example of a sentence? Last Christmas I gave you my heart. The very next day you gave it away. Yes, you gave it away. Do I get an extra point? No, you don't. Hang on. And why is it past simple, Birgit? Why do we not say I have given it away? Yeah, because it's definitely talking about last year, which is over. It's a point in time in the past. So that's simple past. Okay. Now we have a bonus question. What year was this single released? When was last Christmas released? I've got three options. 1982, 1984 or 1986. Dave's waving his hand around. I could have said it was in the 80s. So let me think now. Can I answer this? No, if she gets it wrong, you can answer. My guess would be, but I might be wrong. 86. Wrong. It's 84. It's 84. Ka-ching! Ka-ching! Dave gets a bonus point. Dave gets a bonus point. It was 1984. The funny thing is, it wasn't actually number one. Did you know that? It never got to number one. I wouldn't know. I only know a few people who hate this song, but I like it. I like it. Okay, so this leads me on to Dave's first question. Number one in 1984 was Do They Know It's Christmas? Band-Aid. That was number one. So my question in the song Do They Know It's Christmas? Band-Aid, Feed the World, a charity supergroup was formed of British and Irish pop stars and rock stars. Which British pop star sings the first four lines of the song? It's Christmas time. There's no need to be afraid. At Christmas time, we let in the lights and we banish shame. I've forgotten his name. I can see the video. I can see the guy. And I forgot. Don't I have three options? No. You gave Bill three options. That's true. I saw the film and I know who was in charge and who wrote the song. Yeah, who's in charge and wrote the song? Michael Jackson together with... The guy from Boomtown Rats? Bob Geldof. Bob Geldof, yes. Michael Jackson was We Are The World. That was the American version. Oh, sorry. No, we're on the British version. Oh, okay. Sorry. Paul Young. Paul Young, you see? You got it. It was somewhere in the back of my head. There's one point to Dave. Now for a bonus, who sings after Paul Young? And in a world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy. Boy George? Yes, very good. Wow. He knows a lot about music. Yeah, he's one of those you grow up with. I mean, I'm a 70s guy. So when it was 84, I was... And how many times did we watch that video? How many times have I seen that video? So it's Paul Young followed by Boy George. Well done, Dave. Currently, Dave's got three points and Birgit's only got one point. Yeah. Okay. Steady. It's very early. It's very early. Early days. Early days. Next question. Next song question for Birgit. Actually, I found out it's Austrian, but the German Christmas song, Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht. Alles schläft, einsam wacht. Also, we sing this in English. I'm sure a lot of English people don't even know it's a German Christmas song. Do you know those lines in English? How do we sing Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht, Alles schläft, einsam wacht? Oh, my God. All of it. Silent night, of course. Holy night. Yes. And that's... Then it gets trickier. A silent night, holy night. I'll give you all... All is silent. No, all is quiet. A word a bit like silent. All is... I have no idea. All is calm. All is calm. All is bright. No, I don't know. Did you say bright? Bright, yeah. No, I don't think she did. She didn't say bright. She did. I said bright. Yes, I did. All is calm, all is bright. Yes. There we go. Not a very good translation then, was it really? Yeah. Never translate word by word. They didn't have depot back then, did they? Terrible. I was confused with the einsam wacht. Why are we einsam? Einsam? Because there's nobody else there. Ah, okay. We're lonely. Yeah. Okay. I was confused by the einsam. Einsam. Why are we einsam? Why are we lonely? Yeah, okay. Okay. Nobody else there. Nobody else there, yeah. Alone in the woods. Alone in the woods. Okay. All right. Dave, you ready for your next question? Yes, all ready. Very good. So, one of my favourite Christmas songs, The Pogues and Kirsty McColl. Oh, this is a home run. I know this one. Fairytale of New York. Yes. So, in the line, which choir is singing and what are they singing about? Oh, it's the, yes. And the boys of the mm-mm-mm choir are singing mm-mm-mm. New York Police, isn't it? Yes. New York Police Department singing. NYPD choir. NYPD choir, yes. I think I got that right. And then the other bit was, I've forgotten what they sing. The boys of the NYPD choir are singing. Galway Bay. Galway Bay, there you go. There you go. Thank you for leading me into that one. Yes. Very good. Helping you along. Galway Bay, yes, which is an Irish song about Galway, I presume, about Galway Bay. Because they say a lot of the NYPD were formerly and possibly still are of Irish origin. Exactly, yes. Oh, interesting. Irish immigrants, yes. Mm-hmm. So, bonus question. Oh. When was this released? Was it 84, 86 or 87? 87. Oh, Dave, wow. You're doing really well. I actually played it this morning. Really? Oh, you prepared yourself. Yes. Wow. I didn't know that was going to come, but I played it earlier. 87. Wow. Okay. Can we have the scores on the doors, please? Scores on the doors. Scores on the doors. Big has two. Oh. David has five. Oh, my God. Because he's got his bonus points and he stole some bonus points. I'm lagging behind, but I'm not surprised. I'm not very good at songs and guessing. Come on. No worries. Next one will be an easy one for you, I'm sure. Rebecca? Yes. So, this is question three for Birgit, right? Yes. As we discussed last Christmas, Rudolf has some other friends, some other reindeer. You just have to finish the line. So, we're going to sing and you have to finish the missing gap. Come on. I'm not going to make you list all the reindeer again. No, no, no. Ah. Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer, had a very... Shiny nose. Shiny nose. Very good. And if you ever saw it, you would even say... It glows. All of the other reindeer used to... Call him names. Laugh and call him names. Yeah. They never let poor Rudolf... Play in any reindeer games. Ah, we'll give you that. Oh, well done. Well done. It was a join in reindeer games. Ah, okay. Yeah. Very good. Okay. Yeah. Perfect. Bonus question. What was the weather like on this day? Foggy. Yes. Very good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Then one foggy Christmas Eve. Yes. And he came to say, it was foggy. Very good. Very good. Oh, my God. Biggest two points. I know the children's songs. Thank you. So, Dave, your next question. Again, I'm going to sing the words and you have to finish the line. Okay. The song is Santa Claus is coming to town. Oh. He sees you when... That doesn't get much. It's in the middle. Okay. So, Santa Claus is coming to town. Santa Claus is coming to town. Santa Claus is coming to town. He sees you when... You. He knows when... You're awake. Yeah. Thank you, Birgit. So, the first line, he sees you when... You're sleeping. Yes, thank you, Birgit. She's getting your points, Dave. He knows when you're awake. He knows if... I don't know this song. Go on, Birgit. And then by your mistake. He knows if you've been bad or good. So, be good for goodness sake. Oh, my God. You don't know this one? Hell, yes. He sees you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good. So, be good for goodness sake. For goodness sake. Yeah. That's it. that one Dave? No? No. Vick has got your points there. She stole your points. Thank you. How many points is that then? Oh well that was one point. She's stolen your main point. Well there is a bonus point for that question. Okay. This is quite difficult actually. Which famous rock star, American rock star, sang a very popular live version of that song in 1975? And you often hear it on the radio at Christmas. Frank Sinatra? Nope. Rock star. He was a rock star. He's not a crooner. Okay. Can I have another go? Go on. I don't know but I just want to have another go. Another guess. Is it a group or a singer? It's a singer. It's an individual person. Very, very famous. 70 well. 75 actually. It's quite early. Famous American. Nope. Bruce Springsteen. Of course. Yeah. It was a really famous version of this song. I was also surprised. 75 seemed very early but there we go. Okay. All right. Okay. Birgit is currently on five points and Dave is also on five points. So it's neck and neck. I've caught up. Unbelievable. I'm going to have to put my thinking cap on here guys. Come on. Are you good at films? No. I'm better at music than films. Okay. First question is for Dave. This is actually easy I think if you're German. But in the 1990 Christmas film Home Alone, what is the name of the main character who is accidentally left home alone during Christmas? Now in German it's in the title I think of the film so it's easy. In English it's just called Home Alone. What's the kid's name? I think he's got a hand up. Me, me, me. Let me just think. I can allow you to be thinking. What's his name? Kevin. Yes. Yeah. Wonderful. I think I remember that from the German. You're right. Alliance of Houses. In English it's just called Home Alone. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Now bonus question. This is a really difficult one. Where are the family going on holiday? So they leave... Dave? I wouldn't have known that. You jumped in. Oh, you have looked it up. Oh, was it for me? Oh, no, that was it was your question. You're right. Okay. I didn't know that. I was like Paris, really? Yeah. It was a long flight. The Americans were going to Paris. Wow. Wouldn't have thought that. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So Birgit, your question. Which 2003 Christmas film stars Will Ferrell as a human raised by elves in the North Pole? Oh, my God. You know Will Ferrell? Yes, I have a face. The guy with kind of curly hair, comedian. Very funny. Yeah, I have a face in front of my head. Raised by... Elves. By elves. At the North Pole. So he goes and he's like, he loves Christmas. Dave, do you know the name of the film? No. No. It's just called Elf. Elf? Yeah. Okay. Really? Yeah. Bonus point. Do you know his name? The elf? The elf? His name in the film? No, nobody knows. Elfie? That's a good guess. Phil the elf? No. Bodhi. Bodhi the elf? No. No. Okay. No points there. That's a good film. You should watch. It's funny, actually. It's very entertaining. Okay. Dave, your question. Okay. Which Christmas action movie, released in 1988, features an NYPD officer, John McClane? He's the star. He's not the actor. He's the character. Christmas action movie, 1988, with a police officer called John McClane. Very famous film. And I think it all happens on Christmas Eve. There's a Christmas party. Do you know Birkett? No. It's kind of one of these unlikely Christmas films because it's an action film. It doesn't really fit with Christmas, but it all happens on Christmas Eve. Can you give us another clue? They're in like a skyscraper and there's some terrorists and they're going to blow up the building. And he's at a Christmas party, I think with his wife. Is it Inferno? No. Bruce Willis? Why are you saying? Bruce Willis. Oh, that's Stig Langsdorff. Stig Langsdorff, you know the German name? Is that the one? It is. Yeah. But what's it called in English? What's it called in English? Shit. I can't think of the name in English. Stig Langsdorff, Die Slowly. No. Die Slowly. What is it? What's the English one? Die on Another Day? No. No. I can't think of the English one. What's the English title? I can't think of it. Die Hard. Die Hard. Die Hard, of course. Die Slowly. Yeah. So in English it's called Die Hard. In German it's called Die Slowly. I don't know the action films. I'm sorry. I don't think I have watched it. 1988. 88. Yeah. 88. All right. We'll go to the next one. I'm worried now these are too difficult. Yeah, rightly so. The Muppets had a Christmas film in 1992 and it tells a classic Charles Dickens Christmas story. What is the name of the story? Christmas Carol. Oh, well done, Birgit. Oh, I've seen that so many times. I tell you, with the children's films. You've seen the Muppet one? You've seen the Muppet one? Yeah. Yeah. And I've seen other ones. A Christmas Carol. Oh, very good. Dave, do you know that film, The Muppets? No. Should watch that. I love The Muppets. I love The Muppets. That's wonderful. So bonus question, Birgit. Who plays Scrooge in the Muppets version? Which actor? I knew you were going to ask that because I'm not good with names. British actor. Should know that one, but I can't think of it now. Got me there. As soon as you say it, I will regret. Oh, don't worry about it. It's only a point, Birgit. Michael Caine. Yeah. Yeah. Michael Caine. Yeah. Yeah. Michael Caine plays Scrooge in the Muppet version. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Michael Caine. Okay. Can we go back to music, please? No. Dave, your last question. God, I hope you get this right. This is actually one of my favourite 80s films. It's an 80s film, so you might do okay. Okay. In which 1984 film does the main character, Billy, get a special pet called Gizmo for Christmas? Billy Elliot? Gizmo. Gizmo. Yeah. Billy Elliot. I was thinking, but he doesn't. Special pet. He gets a special pet for Christmas. Don't know Gizmo. No. Mugwey. Mugwey. No. Is it the Gremlins? Yes. Very good, Birgit. I think he gets the point. Birgit. Believable. Yeah. He gets the pet for Christmas. He gets the Mugwey. No, he calls it Gizmo. Gremlins. Me and my brother watch this every year. Okay. I haven't ever watched it. No. So, well, the bonus point is, what are the rules with Mugwey? So, he says, this is your gift, but remember, never and never. Otherwise, the Gizmo turns into a gremlin. Something you shouldn't feed them. Yes. Yep. After midnight, I'll give you that. Shouldn't feed them after midnight. And another one, you shouldn't get them wet. Should never get them wet. Yeah. Water. Yeah. Never give them water. Wow. Dave, I think Birgit's taken over at the last minute. Yeah. I haven't even watched the film, but something about feeding, I knew. Gremlins. Classic film. Gremlins. Gremlins. Okay. Last question. And it's Birgit's question. I think she might get this one. What's the scores on the doors? Scores on the doors. Dave has seven points and Birgit has two, four, five, six. She has eight points. Oh, it's coming down to it now. I could steal it. Quite comfortable. If there's a draw, do we have an extra question? I have a tiebreaker question. Oh, okay. Well, we could get bonus points. What's the price? I haven't decided yet. The honour of taking part, Birgit. Oh, thank you. I'll send you gremlins on DVD and you can watch it. Oh, yes, please. On DVD, we don't even. You can stream it. Whatever. You've got to watch it. Okay. Last question for Birgit. Which 2003 Christmas film stars Hugh Grant playing the British prime minister? He plays the prime minister. Yeah. He's the prime minister. It's a Christmas film. 2003. There's actually a lot of famous people in this film. Keira Knightley's in it. Hugh Grant. I think I only started noticing Hugh Grant after Four Weddings and a Funeral. And that was, yeah, this was before that was later. So he played the prime minister. I'm sure I've seen that. I can't remember. Dave, do you know? What's the film called? Nobody knows. Nope. Wow. Love Actually. No, nobody knows Love Actually. Too Soft for My Family. What do you people watch at Christmas? I'm confused. We watch that one with the family going home all the time and the house explodes. Oh, The Griswolds. The Griswolds. Lampoon's Vacation. Yes. That's a good one. You need some action. Yeah, I like that one. So Tatsächlich Liebe in German. So Love Actually. Nice false friend there. Actually. That's actually not Liebe aktuell. There we go. Wow. So Birgit is in the lead by one point. Shall we do the bonus round? Oh, I think we should. Go for it. Yeah. Okay. All right. So the bonus round. Last year we did a Christmas episode and we discussed the reindeer. And as Birgit pointed out, there are nine reindeer. And I did sing a little song. So do you have a pen and paper? Yes. So you've got a few seconds to write down as many reindeer names without cheating on chat GPT, Dave. Me? I never do such a thing. Never. Write down as many names of your reindeer as possible. See if you can get nine. Are you not singing the song? No, I'm not. Then I'll give you the answer. We should think of them. I thought we should. You've got to think of as many. There's nine reindeer. Write down their names. Does that include Rudolph? Yeah. Rudolph's one of them. Obviously. We had this last year. We're making them up. I'm just shaking my head thinking we had that last year. It was a year ago. And still nobody knows. I'm just guessing. Dave, do you want to list yours? How many of you got Birgit already? How many do you think you've got? Two and a half. Two and a half. How can you have half? Half a reindeer. Half a reindeer. I'm not sure about that. Dave, how many have you got? Possibly five. Okay. We'll hear Dave's possibly five. For some reason. Well, there's Rudolph. Yeah. Is the one called Vixen or something? Yes. Vixen. Yeah. Prancer. Prancer. Yeah. It's one. Yeah. Prancer. Mincer. Mincer. Mincer. There's no mincer. Well, I've got three. So Rudolph, Vixen and Prancer you've got. I have something with Dancer as well. Dancer's one. Yeah. Dancer is one. So four. You've got four. Dave gets four points. One, two, three, four. Birgit. Well, I could list now. Vixen obviously. No, not going to do that. I didn't have those. So Rudolph. Yeah. Is there Blitz and Donner? Blitzer and Donner. Yeah, exactly. The German ones. Oh my God. And Tinker and Winker. I'm not sure about that. That sounds nice, but there's no Tinker in the name. I made them up. Okay. No, no idea. So it's Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. And then Rudolph. See? There we go. So what is it now then? Is it? Hang on. Five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11. Birgit has 11 points and Dave has five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10. Birgit wins. Oh. Germany wins. They always win on penalties. Yeah. They always win on penalties. It's always equal and then they win on penalties. It was obviously the Donner and Blitzen, wasn't it? The Donner and Blitzen took it. Donner and Blitzen took the line, yes. Oh my God. Thank you so much for preparing this. I'm sorry. I felt like it's too complicated. So homework is to watch Gremlins, watch Elf with Will Ferrell. That's a good one. Yeah. Dave, you need to watch the Muppets. Muppets, definitely. We always listen to Bruce Springsteen doing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. And we definitely need to learn our reindeer. Definitely. Yeah, that's true. That's true. Thanks, Chip. So Dave, how are you spending Christmas this year? What are you doing? What am I doing at Christmas? My father's coming over to Spain, so we'll be just having a nice, quiet Christmas with my father. He's coming over from Sheffield. And yeah, just a normal Christmas with the family. And does your wife cook turkey or what do you normally eat? Do you have a traditional dinner? Yeah, yeah. Maybe not turkey necessarily, but chicken or beef. Or beef, yeah. But definitely, my wife will cook some kind of traditional... I miss the Christmas pie, though. Christmas pudding afterwards. Christmas pudding? I don't miss that. The rum sauce. Can't you get it? Well, not necessarily the pudding, but the rum sauce. Really? I hate Christmas pudding. Do you really? Oh, I don't like Christmas pudding. I really don't need that in my life. But your father could bring it over from... I suppose so, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, definitely. Birgit, what are you doing at Christmas? Well, my parents-in-law are coming over and we're celebrating together with the children. On the 24th? On the 24th, yeah. It's Christmas Eve, yeah, traditional. Parents-in-law will stay that night and then on the Christmas Day, I think we'll stay here and then we are going to go on a short trip to Breslau, Poland. Oh, nice. We need to be back before New Year's Eve because the children don't want to be away. Yeah, it's where my father's family is originally from. I've never been there, so I need to... Oh, I've heard it's... I've never been, but I've heard it's really nice though. Yeah, it's supposed to be a nice city, yes. I think they also have Christmas markets, right? Do they have Polish... They have Christmas markets, don't they, yeah? I think so. Yeah, apparently, well, we thought about stopping in Dresden, but the Strezl market, my maiden name... Oh, right, yes. I remember that from last year. Yeah, last year, yeah. Will be over on the 24th, so I'll miss that. A lot of them finish 23rd, 24th, that's right. And we might have a fondue this year, so, yeah. On Christmas Day or Christmas Eve? Christmas Eve, yeah. Christmas Eve. Oh, that's the more... Yeah, the more... So the main Christmas German... Main, main, main... Day. Dinner, yeah. And you, what about you? My family are coming, so my parents and my brother are coming. I decided this year I don't want to cook, so... Good idea. Very well. Just can't deal with it. I decided this year we are going away for Christmas and we are spending Christmas in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Wow. And it's very cute and it's got this very famous Christmas shop that is actually open, I think, 365 days a year. And it's a really nice German, very kind of traditional town, very pretty. And we're spending, I think, yeah, 23rd, 24th, 25th. Oh, wow. We're going to be away. Will it be busy in that little town? Yeah, we've been before actually at Christmas and it is pretty busy. It's very popular. There's a Christmas market and like I said, there's this famous Christmas shop. You can get yourself another... Oh, my little men. My little men. Nutcrackers. Yes, my nutcrackers. It's a bit like IKEA, though. When you go in, you can't get out. There's like arrows and you have to walk around. You can't go backwards. You can't reverse. So like once you're in, it's like you're in. You have to spend some money. And you have to spend masses of money. Yes. So that's the plan for Christmas. No cooking. Yeah, wonderful. Relaxing. Yes. OK. All right. So well done to Birgit for winning the quiz. Thank you very much. But I didn't feel very confident. I must say. And wishing everybody a very Merry Christmas and we will see you soon. Yes. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Thank you so much for pressing play today.
